Northern PDP Stakeholders Back Kabiru Turaki as Consensus Chairmanship Candidate
Northern stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as their consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman ahead of the party’s elective convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, disclosed this to journalists after a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the decision does not bar any other interested aspirant from contesting the position.
The meeting, convened to foster unity within the party ahead of the November 15–16 convention, was attended by key northern PDP figures, including the governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Zamfara, and Plateau States; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro; PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum; and other notable northern leaders.
The session was hosted at the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
Those present included the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri.
Also in attendance were former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Abba Moro.
The PDP’s national elective convention is expected to elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) who will lead the party into the 2027 general elections and beyond.
Makarfi himself is said to have been among the northern contenders for the position, alongside other senior party figures, including former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.
