Lagos Police Record 111 Defilement Cases in Three Months

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police has reported a total of 111 defilement cases between April and June 2023.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Hundeyin expressed concern over the rising number of defilement cases in the state, revealing that during the same period, the command also recorded 14 rape cases and 56 cases of domestic violence.

Within the three-month period, 99 suspects were charged to court, demonstrating the command’s dedication to holding perpetrators of domestic and gender-based violence accountable.

Currently, 83 cases related to these offenses are under investigation, indicating the command’s commitment to addressing and prosecuting gender-based violence incidents in Lagos State.

Hundeyin highlighted the remodeling of the command’s Gender Unit under the supervision of CP Idowu Owohunwa, which signifies the commitment to dealing decisively with culprits of gender-based violence.

He further noted that additional officers have been trained and assigned to the unit to enhance investigations into gender-based violence cases.

The police spokesperson urged the public to speak out against abuse and report incidents of gender and sexual abuse they witness, assuring them that the command will take action to protect their rights.
