Sanwo-Olu Okays N85,000 Minimum Wage for Lagos Workers

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to increase the minimum wage in the state from N70,000 to N85,000.
Speaking during a live interview on Channels TV’s “One-on-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu” on Wednesday evening, the governor confirmed that discussions with labour unions had already taken place.
He explained that the wage increase reflects the state’s ability to sustain it and aims to address the rising cost of living in Lagos. Sanwo-Olu also hinted at further wage increases in the near future.
He said, “We’ve already had conversations with the unions about this. The minimum wage in Lagos will be N85,000. This isn’t a competition; it’s a reflection of what we can afford as a state. We recognise the premium cost of living in Lagos.”
Sanwo-Olu added, “Earlier this year, we increased salaries, and come January, I hope to announce that the minimum wage in Lagos has been raised to N100,000.”
In addition, the governor discussed plans to expand the state’s transportation infrastructure, particularly the rail system, with the goal of connecting all five districts of the state.
It should be recalled that in July, President Bola Tinubu approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, with a commitment to review the wage law every three years.
