IITA to Collaborate with FG to Enhance Food Security

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has expressed its readiness to collaborate closely with the Federal Government to enhance food security within the country.

Mr. Simeon Ehui, the Director-General of IITA, made this announcement during an interaction with State House Correspondents following a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

The declaration comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security on July 13, prompted by inflation in food prices stemming from insecurity issues in the North-East, North-West, and South-East regions.

Ehui, underscoring the institute’s unwavering commitment to eradicating food insecurity in Nigeria, conveyed gratitude to the Federal Government for its consistent support since IITA’s establishment in 1967.

He stated, “Our purpose in visiting Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with the Chairman of the institute’s Board, was to express appreciation to the Government for its steadfast support over the more than 60 years since IITA’s inception.”

Ehui highlighted encouraging updates received from the Vice President regarding the Government’s ongoing backing for the institute. He further conveyed IITA’s eagerness to collaborate with the Government in bolstering food security and eliminating food insecurity in Nigeria.

The Director-General elaborated that IITA functions as a research institution that leverages technology development to ensure optimal yields and superior seed quality. He also emphasized the institute’s partnerships with national and state governments, as well as various agencies, to enhance agronomic practices and implement effective disease control measures.

“Our involvement extends to the advancement of agricultural business development,” Ehui added. He underscored the pivotal role of value chain development in addressing the burgeoning population’s escalating demand for agricultural products. IITA focuses on refining processed product production to augment value chains and extend technological support.

Ehui spotlighted IITA’s contributions to the cassava sector, citing the organization’s dedicated efforts to enhance organization and processing methodologies. These interventions are geared towards improving the livelihoods of individuals engaged in agricultural enterprises.

In conclusion, the collaborative commitment between IITA and the Federal Government reflects a concerted effort to fortify food security and transform agricultural landscapes, fostering sustainable development and progress for the nation.
