Ogoni to Host Federal Environmental University as Tinubu Signs Bill Into Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology, Ogoni.

The President assented to the bill at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Tinubu described the establishment of the university as a “significant milestone” in the country’s pursuit of environmental justice, education, and sustainable development.

“I have signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology. The Ogoni people have been at the forefront of national development and environmental activism, yet they have suffered severe environmental degradation,” he stated.

The President affirmed that the new university underscores his administration’s “unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta, and the nation as a whole”.

“For decades, the Ogoni people have led the struggle for environmental restoration and sustainable development, influencing both national and global conversations on these critical issues.

“With this new institution, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances while creating opportunities for learning, innovation, and economic growth. The university will serve as a centre of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills required to tackle contemporary environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to our national sustainable development goals,” Tinubu stated.

The President expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for passing the bill and commended stakeholders—including traditional institutions, the academic community, private sector partners, and youth groups—for their contributions towards realising this vision.

He urged all stakeholders to “embrace the university as a beacon of knowledge, unity, and progress”.
