US Returns $52.88m Linked to Diezani to Nigeria for Anti-Corruption Projects

The Federal Government of Nigeria has received $52.88 million in recovered assets linked to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, from the United States.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, announced this during the official signing ceremony of the asset recovery agreement between Nigeria and the United States in Abuja on Friday.

In his remarks, Fagbemi disclosed that $50 million of the recovered funds would be channelled through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2.88 million would be allocated to the International Institute for Justice to strengthen the justice system and combat corruption.

Fagbemi described the recovery as a milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States to tackle corruption and uphold the rule of law. He added that the event underscores President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing corruption in the country.

Meanwhile, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, urged Nigerian authorities to ensure the transparent and effective utilisation of the recovered funds for the benefit of its citizens.
