IGP Prohibits Plainclothes Officers from Bearing Assault Rifles

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to police officers across the country against human rights violations and other forms of misconduct.

“No operative should be seen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti),” the IGP stated during a virtual meeting with senior police officers on Monday. This directive was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.

Egbetokun noted that the police hierarchy had received numerous complaints regarding rights violations through the Force’s complaint channels. He emphasised that any conduct infringing on human rights would not be tolerated and would attract severe consequences.

“The IGP also cautioned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, stressing the need for officers to operate in their approved uniforms,” the statement read in part.

“All tactical squads must adhere to the standard operating procedures and ensure they are properly dressed in the designated uniforms assigned to their respective squads.

“The IGP further reiterated the prohibition of indiscriminate case transfers without his written approval. Such actions, he said, would no longer be condoned as they place unnecessary burdens on the parties involved and delay the administration of justice.”
