Tax Reform Is Non-Negotiable, Tinubu Declares in Media Chat

President Bola Tinubu has firmly stated that his administration will not reverse the controversial tax reforms recently introduced, despite significant public opposition.

Speaking during his first presidential media chat, broadcast on Monday evening, Tinubu argued that the economy could not be revived using outdated approaches.

“Tax reform is here to stay. We cannot continue to rely on the outdated methods of the past in today’s economy,” he said. “This economy cannot be rebuilt with old, broken systems. I believe I have the capacity to make these changes, which is why I pursued the presidency.”

The President assured Nigerians that his reforms are focused on the country’s long-term needs. “I am determined to do what Nigeria requires, even if it’s not immediately convenient for everyone. It won’t be an Eldorado for all, but this is the dawn of a new era. I am convinced of this path, and so should you,” he declared.

On 3rd October, Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly. These proposals have sparked widespread controversy, particularly in northern Nigeria, where they have faced strong resistance.

In response to the backlash, the National Economic Council recommended that the President withdraw the bills to allow for further consultations. However, Tinubu rejected the advice, insisting that the bills should proceed through the legislative process as planned.
