Justice, Support, and a Monument: Oyo’s Response to Bodija Tragedy

The Oyo State Government has approved ₦4.5 billion in financial support for victims and survivors of the Bodija explosion, which occurred on 16 January 2024.
The decision was taken during an ongoing Executive Council meeting at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, the approved funds are in addition to the over ₦200 million already spent by the government on emergency accommodation, feeding, hospital care, and security in the aftermath of the incident.
He said the Council also endorsed the recommendations of a 10-man committee to revoke the titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, the scene of the explosion, in the public interest. A memorial monument will be constructed on the site in honour of the victims.
“The Council expressed concern over the spread of disinformation, half-truths, and deliberate falsehoods being circulated by individuals claiming to represent the affected residents. These insinuations are unfair and misleading. The government remains committed to delivering justice for its citizens,” Oyelade said.
He noted that the disbursement process had been complicated by family disputes among some beneficiaries, requiring careful intervention by the committee.
Additionally, the government will support the rebuilding of homes on properties adjoining the blast site, based on recommendations from state-appointed structural engineers.
The Commissioner added that the Ministry of Justice would ensure the effective prosecution of suspects currently arraigned in connection with the incident, while security agencies continue to pursue others still at large.
During the executive session, Governor Seyi Makinde advised the public to disregard rumours surrounding ongoing cabinet reshuffling. He clarified that the move was not intended to sack any cabinet member but to enhance performance and maintain the administration’s momentum through to the end of its tenure in 2027.
“The reshuffle is aimed at injecting renewed efficiency into the government’s operations. Only those found to be distracted will be replaced,” the governor was quoted as saying.
