Gospel Singer Tope Alabi Addresses ‘Aboru Aboye’ Controversy

Tope Alabi, a popular gospel singer, has responded to the criticism surrounding a viral video in which she was heard singing in Yoruba and using the phrase ‘Aboru Aboye,’ a greeting commonly used among Ifa initiates.

The controversial singer faced heavy backlash after referring to herself as ‘ebo,’ which translates to ‘sacrifice,’ in one of her songs.

The term ‘Aboru Aboye,’ typically employed by Ifa worshippers to show reverence to the deity, has sparked significant discussion on social media platforms.

In the viral video, Alabi stated, “Abiye ni mi, Oruko mi ni yen. Mo de bo, mo ru, mo ye” (I am a sacrifice, that’s my name. I am a sacrifice accepted by God, that’s my name).” These lyrics elicited a range of reactions from social media users.

However, in a response to the criticism, Alabi addressed the issue in another video that is being circulated on social media. In it, the singer who can be seen ministering in a white garment church, said that ‘Aboru Aboye’ is purely a Yoruba phrase and not exclusive to traditionalists.

Alabi stated, “It is written that David made a sacrifice of faithfulness to God. In the Yoruba version of the Bible, why wasn’t the word ‘sacrifice’ translated directly from English? It’s because it’s a Yoruba language.”

She further explained that using the language skillfully is her distinctive style as a gospel artist. Alabi emphasized that there is no specific language reserved for traditionalists, as they all speak Yoruba.

She acknowledged that if some individuals choose to use the language in their own unique way, it should be accepted. She added, “We have also decided to use it in our own style.”

Alabi referred to Romans 12:1, stating, “Brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. The word ‘acceptable’ is ‘Aboru,’ while ‘living sacrifice’ is ‘Aboye’.”
