NMA Consults Hospital Management Following Doctor’s Death

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has initiated consultations with the management of General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, to address infrastructure concerns for both staff and patients.

This move comes after the NMA directed medical doctors in three government hospitals on Lagos Island to begin an indefinite strike in response to the tragic death of Dr. Vwaere. The hospitals affected by the strike are General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, and Massey Street Children’s Hospital.

Additionally, all doctors in other government hospitals across the state were instructed to scale down activities as a mark of respect for their deceased colleague. During this period, only emergency services will be available for the next five days at these hospitals.

The unfortunate incident leading to Dr. Vwaere’s passing occurred on August 1 when the elevator she was in crashed in the hospital’s staff quarters building. Due to the incident and a faulty elevator, health services at General Hospital, Odan, have been disrupted.

Dr. Ismail Ajibowo, Secretary of NMA Lagos, stated that the association had engaged in discussions with the hospital’s management to address the immediate challenges and devise long-term solutions for young doctors’ housing.

“Until these issues are resolved, they (young doctors) can’t stay in that building,” he asserted.

In the wake of the tragedy, the NMA, in collaboration with the Medical Guild and hospital management, has provided support and maintained close contact with the deceased doctor’s family. A memorial service for Dr. Vwaere is scheduled for August 3.

The strike and investigation into the cause of the elevator failure are ongoing. The incident sparked a peaceful protest by her colleagues on August 2, leading to disruptions in clinical services at the hospital.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the mechanical failure that led to Dr. Vwaere’s untimely demise, emphasizing the need for an unbiased and fair inquiry
