Nigerians to Pay More for Phone Calls as FG Approves Tariff Hike

Nigerians will soon have to pay more for phone calls and other telecommunication services as the Federal Government has announced plans to adjust telecom tariffs in response to requests by operatoprs.

The confirmation of tariff hikes, however, came with a reassurance to Nigerians that the increase will not reach the 100% hike requested by operators.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. He noted that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would develop the framework for the proposed adjustments in the telecommunications sector.

Tijani stated: “We have considered various factors to ensure meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s development. These include implementing the Executive Order to protect telecom infrastructure, significantly boosting local content, and ensuring the sustainability of telecom companies.

“With rising global inflation, it is crucial that we prevent telecommunications companies from collapsing. Instead, we must ensure their continued viability so they can support our economy.”

Addressing recent demands by operators, Tijani added: “Over the past weeks, some companies have been agitating for a 100% tariff increase. This is not something the government can support at this time.”
