El-Rufai Warns Against Going To War Over Nigerien Coup

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, has expressed his concerns regarding the proposed military intervention led by President Bola Tinubu within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic.

El-Rufai, who conveyed his thoughts via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday morning, emphasizing that any confrontation between ECOWAS and Niger Republic would essentially pit Northern Nigerians against their counterparts in Niger Republic, describing any military action as a conflict between brothers.

He wrote: “In light of ECOWAS’s consideration of military action, I’m reminded of the 1970s rock classic ‘Brothers in Arms’ by Dire Straits. A conflict within our subregion is tantamount to a clash between siblings. The people of Niger Republic are closely connected to those residing in Northern Nigeria. It is of utmost importance that we make every effort to prevent this fraternal strife.”

He continued, “So, on this hopeful Tuesday, I encourage you to enjoy this timeless classic and ponder its enduring lyrics. While I appreciate the joy music brings, the past decade’s preoccupation with public affairs has regrettably caused me to miss out on such pleasurable moments. It’s time to reacquaint myself with those lost moments. Enjoy!! Life is too fleeting to do otherwise. – @elrufai”

El-Rufai’s call to avert military intervention in Niger aligns with the sentiments shared by other key stakeholders from Northern Nigeria.
