Emefiele Re-Arrested, After DSS, Police Altercation

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday re-arrested Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on two counts of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The arraignment took place before the vacation judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo, following more than six weeks of arrest and detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The secret police succumbed to pressure by arraigning Emefiele on July 13, 2023 and in what is his first public appearance since he was arrested, the DSS operatives brought him to court in a Hilux vehicle.

Led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Joseph Daudu, who was joined by other lawyers, Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

Daudu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), informed the court that his client had been in detention for weeks and that the application for bail had already been filed and served on the prosecution.

In his ruling, Justice Oweibo released Mr. Emefiele on a N20million bail bond with one surety in the like sum.

However, after the court granted Emefiele bail, a physical altercation occurred between the DSS operatives and officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service outside Justice Oweibo’s courtroom at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. Eventually, the prison officials left the premises of the court.
