Breaking News: Speaker Obasa Impeached Amid Accusations of Corruption in Lagos Assembly

The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of statutory and financial infractions.

Following the impeachment, Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and previously served as the House’s Chief Whip. Mojeed Fatai has now been appointed Deputy Speaker.

Obasa’s tenure has been marred by allegations of financial misconduct. A petition filed by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja accused him of using proxy companies to siphon funds from the Assembly and bypassing due process and procurement regulations.

The petition, dated 17 December, also claimed that the Finance Management Committee of the Assembly had not convened since the 10th Assembly was inaugurated, enabling Obasa to make unauthorised financial decisions.

Additionally, the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition had earlier petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Obasa over the alleged mismanagement of ₦17 billion earmarked for constructing a gate at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
