Senate to Resolve Controversial Tax Reform Bills with AGF Amidst National Debate

The Nigerian Senate has constituted a committee to review the controversial Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly. Chaired by Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), the committee is tasked with meeting the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to resolve contentious areas and report back to the Senate before public hearings proceed.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasised the importance of resolving disputes in the bills for national unity and economic stability.
“We must put aside politics and regional biases to find common ground,” Barau stated, adding that the executive and legislative branches agreed to collaborate on resolving disagreements to maintain stability amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had introduced four tax reform bills on 3 October 2024, aiming to harmonise revenue administration. However, the bills have faced criticism, particularly from the northern regions. The National Economic Council had advised President Tinubu to withdraw the bills for further consultation, but he insisted they go through the legislative process.

Last week, the Senate passed the bills for a second reading via voice vote, despite ongoing controversies.
