FG Revokes 1,633 Mining Licenses Over Non-Payment of Fees

The Federal Government has taken a firm stance by revoking 1,633 mineral titles as mining companies failed to meet the mandatory annual service fees of N1,500 per cadastral unit.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced the revocation, spanning Exploration Licences, Quarry Licences, Small Scale Mining Licences, and Mining Leases.
“In accordance with the NMMA 2007, Section 5 (a), I have approved the revocation of these 1,633 titles,” Alake stated, highlighting collaborative efforts with security agencies to ensure compliance within affected areas.
Alake elucidated Sections 11 and 12 of the NMMA 2007, emphasizing non-payment as grounds for revocation. He underscored the 30-day notice provided before revocation as per due process.
Emphasizing government efforts, Alake mentioned administrative alerts sent through the title administration portal, urging companies to fulfill their obligations.
The revocation process began on October 4, 2023, covering various titles. Despite an extended deadline until November 10, only 580 titleholders responded, resulting in the final recommendation of 1,633 title revocations.
The government followed due process, issuing notifications through the Federal Government Gazette and courier services, in accordance with regulations.
