Police Probe Deadly Stampedes at Food Distribution Events in Abuja, Anambra

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an investigation into the tragic stampedes that occurred during food distribution events in Abuja and Anambra State.
At least ten people lost their lives, and many others were injured during the distribution of food items to vulnerable individuals at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja. Similarly, three fatalities and multiple injuries were recorded during a charity drive in Okija, Anambra State.
Addressing the incidents, IGP Egbetokun described the negligence displayed by organisers as criminal. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the IGP has tasked the Commissioners of Police in the affected states to carry out comprehensive investigations.
“The IGP has mandated the commissioners to thoroughly investigate these tragic incidents and ensure necessary legal actions follow,” Adejobi said.
The IGP also urged government officials, community leaders, non-governmental organisations, and individuals to collaborate in creating a more organised and secure framework for distributing palliatives. He further warned that groups or individuals planning similar events must involve security agencies to prevent a recurrence.
“Negligence in such cases will not be overlooked and may attract legal consequences as stipulated in Section 196 of the Penal Code and Section 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Adejobi stated.
