Tinubu Announces Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Lagbaja

The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced the passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56 after a period of illness. The tragic loss occurred on Tuesday night in Lagos.
Lt. General Lagbaja, born on 28 February 1968, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on 19 June 2023 by President Tinubu. His military career was one of dedication and honour, spanning over three decades from his enrolment at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. After his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on 19 September 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course, Lt. General Lagbaja distinguished himself in various military roles.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his “heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time.” He also expressed his gratitude for the late General’s significant contributions to the nation and offered prayers for his eternal rest.
Throughout his career, he demonstrated exemplary leadership, serving as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His service saw him actively involved in key internal security operations across Nigeria, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
An alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, reflecting his commitment to military strategy and leadership excellence. His dedication to his role and his service to Nigeria’s security were widely recognised and respected within the military and beyond.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
