Tinubu Suspends Edu as Minister Suspension Pending Investigation

President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action by suspending Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, pending an investigation into alleged corruption within the ministry. Recent reports in the media prompted this decision.

In a statement released on Monday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, this move aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s resources.

The President has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman to conduct a thorough investigation into all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and its affiliated agencies.

Dr. Edu, the suspended minister, has been instructed to transfer her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and fully cooperate with investigative authorities.

Additionally, a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been tasked with assessing the financial structure of social investment programs, aiming to institute comprehensive reforms for the benefit of disadvantaged households and to regain public trust in these initiatives.

These directives from the President are effective immediately.

Previously, President Tinubu had ordered a comprehensive investigation to verify the allegations against Dr. Edu, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring effective and transparent use of public funds to address the needs of Nigerians.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s determination to uncover the truth behind these allegations and take appropriate actions in line with accountability and due process.

Idris emphasized that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, led by Minister Mohammed Idris, is the authoritative source for verified information regarding the Federal Government’s actions. Timely updates on the investigation’s progress will be provided to the public.

In response to the allegations, Dr. Edu denounced them on her social media platform, labeling them baseless attempts to undermine her ministry’s anti-corruption efforts and support for those in need.
