Obasanjo at 88: Tinubu Applauds Former Leader’s Impact on Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, describing him as an “extraordinary leader” whose contributions to Nigeria’s development remain profound.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs, noting that although sometimes controversial, they have played a vital role in shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.

“Former President Obasanjo’s interventions in national affairs have, at times, been controversial, but they have also significantly influenced public policies and served as a check on leadership,” Tinubu remarked.

He praised Obasanjo’s unwavering dedication to national unity, peace, and progress, expressing his wish for continued strength and wisdom for the former leader. Tinubu further described Obasanjo as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter” whose efforts in conflict resolution and governance advocacy have earned him widespread respect across Africa and beyond.

Reflecting on Obasanjo’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s history, Tinubu highlighted his involvement in ending the Nigerian Civil War. As a colonel in the Nigerian Army, Obasanjo received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander Colonel Philip Effiong in 1970. Tinubu also commended Obasanjo’s leadership following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, as well as his commitment to democracy, which saw him oversee a peaceful transition to civilian rule in 1979.

“General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians. As head of state, he consistently demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress,” Tinubu stated.

He noted that Obasanjo remains a significant political figure, both domestically and internationally, using his influence to advocate for good governance, conflict resolution, and Pan-Africanism through platforms such as the African Union and the United Nations.

“As one of Nigeria’s most influential statesmen, his tireless efforts in promoting global peace and governance reforms are a testament to his enduring statesmanship,” Tinubu concluded.
