Lawyer Dele Farotimi Remanded Over Alleged Defamation of Afe Babalola

A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti has remanded human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi over alleged defamation against Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).

Farotimi was charged by the Ekiti State Police for statements in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Babalola of judicial corruption. The lawyer pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charge.

The prosecution sought Farotimi’s remand in prison custody, citing the need for further investigation and public safety. However, the defence counsel, Dayo Akeredolu, argued that the defendant should be granted bail on self-recognition, stressing that the charges are bailable and Farotimi poses no threat.

Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled for the defendant’s remand and adjourned the case to 10 December
