Marriage Registry Becomes Major Revenue Source as FG Rakes in Billions

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed that the Federal Government generated approximately ₦2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a media parley with heads of agencies under his ministry, Tunji-Ojo also announced plans to strengthen border security to curb the influx of irregular migrants.
He revealed that the government earned over ₦3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications, marking a 150% increase in overall revenue.
According to him, the marriage registry has become a significant revenue source, surpassing projections in 2023 by collecting over ₦892 million as of 31st October.
Additionally, the minister highlighted that revenue from expatriate quota permits had exceeded expectations. In 2023, the ministry generated over ₦1 billion from such permits, surpassing the initial target of ₦600 million by more than ₦400 million.
