Abacha Family Accuses Babangida of Distorting History on June 12 Election

The family of the late General Sani Abacha has dismissed claims by former Military President Ibrahim Babangida regarding the annulment of the 12 June 1993 presidential election.
In his recently published memoir, A Journey in Service, Babangida attributed the annulment to his then Chief of Defence Staff, General Abacha.
However, in a statement on Sunday, Abacha’s son, Mohammed Abacha, accused Babangida of attempting to distort historical facts.

“Our attention has been drawn to claims in General Babangida’s newly launched book that our late father was responsible for annulling the June 12 election,” he stated.
He argued that since Babangida was the Head of State at the time, he held ultimate executive authority and bore sole responsibility for the annulment.
“The decision to annul the election was taken under Babangida’s administration. Any attempt to shift the blame to General Abacha is a deliberate distortion of history.”
The Abacha family maintained that the late general was loyal to Babangida and even protected him when his life was threatened.
