Senate Urges Military Base in Adamawa as Boko Haram Attacks Escalate

The Senate has called for the immediate establishment of a military base in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, following a resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the region and other parts of the North-East.
The resolution was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary as a matter of urgent national importance. Lawmakers debated a motion drawing attention to the deteriorating security situation in Hong and Gombi LGAs, where multiple coordinated attacks have resulted in several fatalities and displaced thousands.
While commending the efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, the Senate emphasised the need for a permanent military presence in Hong to enhance security and prevent further violence.
Senator Iya Abbas, who sponsored the motion, noted that five major attacks had occurred in Hong LGA since February 2025.
However, Senator Seriake Dickson cautioned that the Senate risked overstepping its constitutional role by recommending the establishment of a military base, which he argued falls under the exclusive purview of the executive arm.
His concerns were countered by Senator Wasiu Eshilokun, who invoked Section 217(2)(c) of the Constitution to assert that the National Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make such recommendations. Eshilokun insisted that the Senate had not breached any legal boundaries, stating: “To say the National Assembly has no power would be a misinterpretation; we have not crossed the line.”
