Coalition of Grievance or Credible Threat? Tinubu Allies Mock 2027 Power Bid

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have dismissed the newly formed political coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, describing the movement as misguided and destined to fail.

Speaking separately, the two leaders accused the coalition of lacking credibility and being driven by disgruntled politicians. Wike, in a televised interview, said the group—comprising former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and others—posed no real threat.

“These are the same people who failed to deliver their local government areas to the PDP in 2023,” Wike argued, accusing them of betrayal and political inconsistency. He cited Mark’s case in particular, noting that while he once led the PDP as Senate President, his daughter ran—and won—under the APC in his own constituency.

Describing the coalition’s formation just six months into Tinubu’s administration as premature, Wike said: “Someone takes office and before he even settles, you launch a coalition to remove him. What about your own record when you were in power?”

He particularly criticised Amaechi for accumulating debt through railway loans and called for the release of the forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), alleging financial impropriety linked to Amaechi’s family.

Sanwo-Olu, echoing Wike’s sentiments, said the coalition was merely a distraction. “Nigerians will never return to Egypt,” he said. “President Tinubu’s reforms—currency stabilisation, student loans, subsidy savings, tax restructuring, and infrastructure—are yielding results.”

He dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party many coalition members are gravitating towards, as a “non-starter” and called the coalition’s leaders “desperate” and “internally displaced politicians.”

Presidential aides also described the opposition group as united only by “bitterness” and lacking any coherent ideology.

Meanwhile, the Niger State chapter of the PDP denied reports that prominent members, including ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu, had defected to the ADC. Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung also maintained that despite ongoing defections, the APC would lose in 2027.

Speaking in Gwagwalada, Abuja, at the inauguration of several projects, Wike again challenged critics of the Tinubu administration to present their own performance records. “If you were in government and failed to deliver, don’t incite Nigerians against someone who’s only just begun,” he said.

He also dismissed calls for mass protests, daring critics to lead any revolt with their own children in the frontlines, rather than from afar.
