Governors Promise Improved Wages from Current Negotiations with Labor

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has assured Nigerians that the ongoing negotiations between the government, private sector, and organized labor will result in better wages for workers.

Following a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the governors issued a communique stating, “The governors agreed to continue engaging with key stakeholders to reach a mutually agreeable solution. We remain dedicated to the process and assure that better wages will result from the ongoing negotiations.”

The communique was signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The governors also discussed other issues affecting the country, including ongoing Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

This meeting took place a day after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) deferred a minimum wage review memo to allow for further consultations. In his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, President Bola Tinubu assured the Organized Labour that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage for workers would soon be sent to the National Assembly for passage. The President is expected to decide on the ₦62,000 proposal from the government and private sector and Labour’s ₦250,000 demand.
