Defence Chief Reveals Foreign Funding Behind Nigeria’s Terrorism Crisis

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has confirmed that terrorist groups operating in Nigeria are receiving foreign funding to further their destabilisation agenda.

Speaking on Arise News Channel’s Morning Show, Musa explained that some surrendered terrorists, as well as those apprehended by troops, were found in possession of foreign currency. He added that a more proactive approach was needed to tackle the country’s security challenges.

Musa’s comments came as the Nigerian military honoured outstanding officers who have made significant contributions to the ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other emerging security threats.

The award ceremony, which took place as part of the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, also recognised those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in securing the nation. The event celebrated the bravery of military personnel and reaffirmed the commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

In his address, Musa confirmed that the military is engaging with foreign partners to trace and block the sources of terrorism financing. He stressed that blocking these funds would severely impact the ability of terrorist groups to sustain their activities. “Terrorism financing is the lifeblood that keeps terrorism alive in Nigeria. If we can cut off their funding, they will naturally fade away,” he said.

Musa further urged troops to intensify their efforts in neutralising criminal elements, declaring that 2025 would be a pivotal year in the fight against insecurity. “We are not where we want to be yet, but we are heading in the right direction. By working together, we will overcome all acts of evil,” he assured.

“We must make a significant difference this year. We need to step outside the comfort zone and relentlessly pursue criminals wherever they hide,” Musa added.

The CDS also paid tribute to fallen heroes and reiterated the military’s dedication to upholding the values of patriotism, loyalty, and dedication, while acknowledging the challenges facing the nation.

“We honour the courage of our fallen heroes and those still in service,” he said. “As we celebrate them, we recognise the ongoing efforts of our armed forces in addressing emerging security challenges and maintaining peace across the region.”
