Awoniyi Recovering After Coma Following On-Pitch Collision

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well after being brought out of an induced coma following abdominal surgery.

The Nigerian forward suffered a serious collision with a goalpost during Forest’s 2–2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday. Although he initially played on, he was later rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after the extent of his injuries became apparent.

He was placed in a medically induced coma to help restrict movement and regulate his heart rate—a precautionary measure rather than a life-saving intervention.

Awoniyi underwent the first stage of surgery on Monday to repair a suspected ruptured intestine, with the second stage, including wound closure, completed on Wednesday. He was brought out of the coma later that evening.

Forest are yet to issue an official statement, but sources close to the club confirmed the positive update.

The incident occurred as Awoniyi, introduced as a substitute, attempted to reach a cross from Anthony Elanga. Elanga was later flagged offside, but the assistant referee delayed the signal in line with VAR protocol—an approach some critics argue increases risk to players.

Forest are expected to launch an internal review of the incident.
