Tinubu Seeks Commitment Against Terror Financing, Others

President Bola Tinubu, addressing the 78th UN General Assembly in New York, has emphasized the need for greater international commitment to combat terror financing, economic exploitation, and illicit mineral and arms smuggling in developing countries.
In a statement released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity in Abuja, President Tinubu outlined key concerns and solutions during his address.
President Tinubu began by urging UN member states to take decisive action against terror financing and economic sabotage, which have far-reaching implications for global security. He highlighted the scourge of illicit mineral and arms smuggling, particularly in mineral-rich regions, that has perpetuated misery and exploitation.
Drawing attention to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a long-standing example, President Tinubu stressed the urgent need to address the pilfering of Africa’s resources, which often fuels violence and jeopardizes national security. He questioned whether this phenomenon was accidental or deliberate.
President Tinubu called on member nations to collaborate in deterring their companies and nationals from participating in the exploitation of Africa’s resources. He emphasized the importance of ending this 21st-century pillaging of the continent’s riches, aligning with the theme of ending poverty and promoting equitable global cooperation.
The President underscored his administration’s commitment to economic development and investment promotion, noting that Nigeria is business-ready. However, he emphasized that the challenge lies in how the world engages with Nigeria and Africa on equal, mutually beneficial terms. He urged greater direct investment, improved access for African exports, and meaningful debt relief as essential aspects of cooperation.
Addressing the global fight against climate change, President Tinubu emphasized the need for customized strategies tailored to each nation’s socio-economic strengths and weaknesses. He highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to combat climate change through initiatives like ‘The Great Green Wall,’ forest preservation, and local water management projects, which simultaneously address economic and environmental objectives.
President Tinubu called for increased investment from established economies in Africa’s preferred climate change projects, emphasizing that true progress can only be achieved when Africa is viewed as a continent of equal opportunity and potential, rather than a place to be pitied. He urged the international community to walk alongside Africa as true friends and partners, recognizing Africa’s pivotal role in shaping the world’s future.
