Lagos Assembly Rift: Tinubu Hosts Lawmakers to Resolve Dispute

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday met with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, including Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, at the State House in Abuja.
The lawmakers arrived in two white buses, with Deputy Speaker Meranda among them, while Speaker Obasa arrived separately a few minutes later. The meeting, held behind closed doors, follows a period of leadership instability within the Assembly.
After the discussions, the lawmakers were seen singing in praise of the president, chanting “On your mandate we shall stand,” as Tinubu walked to his office. One of the attendees remarked, “Everything has been resolved.” However, an official statement has yet to be released.

The leadership tussle in the Lagos Assembly escalated on 13 January 2025, when more than two-thirds of the 40-member House voted to remove Obasa as Speaker over allegations of misconduct and other offences. His then-deputy, Meranda, was immediately elected as Speaker, making her the first female to lead the legislative body in the South-West state.
Obasa rejected his removal, claiming it took place in his absence while he was outside Nigeria. However, 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda insisted his ousting was final and that she remained the legitimate Speaker.
After weeks of power struggles, Obasa was re-elected as Speaker on 3 March 2025, following Meranda’s resignation from the role. Representing Agege Constituency I, Obasa reclaimed his position after Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, stepped down and was immediately re-elected as Deputy Speaker.
Lawmakers praised Meranda for her leadership style and her role in restoring peace within the Lagos State House of Assembly. They also commended her for demonstrating strength and humility by adhering to the rules and regulations of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
