Controversy and APC Wins in Imo, Kogi, Guber Polls

Controversies and Calls for Intervention

Stakeholders flagged instances of over-voting in Kogi, leading to demands for immediate INEC intervention to uphold electoral integrity. Governorship candidates like Murtala Ajaka and Dino Melaye raised concerns, with calls for annulment and highlighting unprecedented irregularities in the electoral process.

Bayelsa: Uzodimma and Diri in Lead, Controversies Emerge

In Imo and Bayelsa states, Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC claimed victory, while Governor Douye Diri of the PDP maintained a significant lead, pending the collation of results from two remaining local government areas. However, the electoral process faced criticism in both states. In Bayelsa, allegations of over-voting led to protests and demands for INEC intervention.

Kogi: Ododo Clinches Victory Amid Electoral Controversy

Usman Ododo of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a win in the off-cycle governorship election in Kogi State, amassing 446,237 votes. The runner-up, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), garnered 259,052 votes, while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed with 46,362 votes. However, concerns were raised about alleged over-voting in certain areas, prompting criticisms of the election’s conduct.

INEC Response and Fresh Elections

INEC acknowledged irregularities, particularly in Kogi, where elections in specific polling units were suspended. Fresh elections were scheduled for November 18 in affected areas. The electoral body faced scrutiny for uploading results from polling units where voting reportedly did not take place.

SERAP’s Appeal for Investigation

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urged INEC to investigate alleged electoral bribery and violence, emphasizing the need to prosecute perpetrators regardless of political affiliations. Reports indicated cases of electoral offences, including violence and vote-buying.

Imo: Uzodimma’s Victory Amid Disputes

In Imo, Governor Uzodimma secured a wide-margin victory, but opponents Samuel Anyanwu and Athan Achonu contested the results, citing electoral flaws. Achonu vowed to seek legal redress, alleging irregularities, vote buying, and compromised security during the elections.

Observers’ Concerns and Condemnation of Electoral Malpractices

Election monitoring groups like YIAGA Africa highlighted concerns about unheld elections in several polling units, urging INEC to clarify discrepancies in uploaded results. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) condemned the violence and electoral malpractices witnessed in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi, criticizing the involvement of security forces in electoral misconduct.
