NLC Protests Electricity Tariff Hike, Pickets NERC and DisCos Offices

The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) in Jigawa, Imo, and Osun States, along with their counterparts nationwide, have embarked on protests against the recent electricity tariff hike. These protests have targeted the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and various Distribution Companies (DisCos).
In Jigawa, the NLC picketed the NERC office and sealed the Kano Electric Distribution Company (KEDCO) district office in Dutse, the state capital. Comrade Hazakilu Husaini and Comrade Bashir Tijjani Abubakar, alongside other union executives, led this action.
Similarly, in Imo, workers from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and other DisCos were denied access to their offices. NLC Chairman in Imo State, Comrade Uche Chigamezu Nwigwe, highlighted the financial strain imposed on Imo residents, especially workers, due to exorbitant bills amid inadequate power supply.
Expressing discontent over the tariff hike, Abimbola Fasasi, TUC Osun State Chairman, led protests in Osogbo, where the main entrance of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Business Hub was blocked. Fasasi emphasized the populace’s rejection of additional financial burdens and urged the government to prioritize improvements in electricity generation and supply.
These protests underscore the public’s dissatisfaction with the recent tariff increment and serve as a call for the government to address the concerns of Nigerian citizens regarding electricity tariffs and supply.
