Lagos Assembly Begins New Era with Meranda’s Leadership Appointments

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has reaffirmed her commitment to fostering collaboration among all arms of government to achieve the vision of a “Greater Lagos.”
In her first official act as Speaker, Meranda announced the appointment of new principal officers to steer the Assembly’s legislative agenda. Honourable Temitope Adedeji, representing Ifako/Ijaiye 1, was appointed as Majority Leader, while Richard Kasunmu of Ikeja 2 became Deputy Majority Leader. David Setonji (Badagry 2) was named Chief Whip, with Ganiyu Sanni (Kosofe 1) as Deputy Chief Whip.
Meranda also announced the members of the Selection Committee, which she chairs. The committee includes Deputy Speaker Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki 1), Majority Leader Temitope Adedeji, Chief Whip David Setonji, and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2). Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun will serve as Secretary.
Expressing gratitude to her colleagues for their confidence in her leadership, Meranda pledged transparency and good governance for the benefit of Lagos residents. “Synergy between the Assembly and other arms of government is vital for democratic development and effective governance,” she said.
Meranda assured the Assembly of her commitment to maintaining open communication with the executive, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to foster mutual respect and cooperation. She urged members to focus on delivering quality services to Lagos residents and prioritising accountability, fairness, and justice in governance.
The Speaker also extended condolences to the people of Badagry following the passing of Pa Sunny Ajose, a respected politician and member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee. She described him as a “rare gem” and directed the Acting Clerk to send a condolence letter to his family.
The Assembly adjourned its plenary session to January 21, 2025.
