FEC Okays Implementation of Oronsaye Report to Cut Governance Costs

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light for the immediate implementation of the Oronsaye Report, aiming to reduce the cost of governance and streamline government operations. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The Oronsaye Report, submitted to the government in 2012, recommends strategies for cutting down the cost of governance by scrapping, merging, or relocating various agencies, commissions, and departments. A committee, headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, has been established to conclude the approved mergers within 12 weeks.

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, disclosed that the president directed the design of a social security scheme for unemployed youths. The decision to implement the Oronsaye Report is seen as a bold move to fine-tune and restructure government operations while aligning with President Tinubu’s vision to reduce the cost of governance.

The approved mergers include agencies such as the National Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS, National Emergency Management Agency, and Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission. Additionally, the government plans to convert the National Blood Service Commission into an agency and relocate the Niger Delta Power Holding Company to the Ministry of Power.

President Tinubu’s administration also emphasizes empathy for the less privileged, with plans for an unemployment benefit program and a social consumer credit scheme to alleviate economic challenges during the current reforms. The FEC has shown commitment to addressing the needs of the citizens while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
