Nigeria’s Toughest Days Are Behind Us, Says Senate President Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that despite the increasingly difficult times, Nigeria will ultimately triumph. He urged citizens to remain patient and hopeful, assuring them that the nation’s best days lie ahead.
Akpabio made these remarks on Sunday during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.
A statement from his media office described President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the Nigerian project as an inspiration and dismissed claims of marginalisation of the South-East under the current administration.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, also called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to continue supporting the country’s unity, territorial integrity, and democracy. Akume said he believed that under Tinubu, Nigeria would become the “most blessed, most successful, and most prosperous nation in Africa.”
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, echoed similar sentiments during a church service in Asaba, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the current economic challenges.
Addressing the congregation at the church service, Akpabio said, “As we celebrate today, let us acknowledge the challenges we face. Yes, the road ahead may be bumpy, and there will be setbacks. But together, united in our faith and love for Nigeria, we will prevail.”
“Our journey to becoming a prosperous nation is just beginning. I urge you all to remain patient and hold on to hope, believing that change is not only possible but inevitable. Nigeria’s brightest days are ahead.”
Akpabio also praised the resilience of Nigerians, recounting the country’s ability to withstand and overcome challenges, from the earliest struggles for independence to the challenges of modern governance.
“In times of adversity, Nigerians rise. When faced with challenges, we unite. Today, I thank God for the Nigerian spirit that has guided us through turbulent times,” he said.
The Senate President commended President Tinubu’s leadership, describing it as a beacon of hope for a better Nigeria. He also highlighted some of the laws passed by the 10th National Assembly, aimed at fostering growth and development in key sectors of the economy.
Akpabio reassured the South-East of inclusivity under the current administration, pointing to the recent passage of the South-East Development Commission Bill as evidence of the government’s commitment to addressing perceived marginalisation.
He concluded by reminding the congregation of the country’s resilience, stating that despite the strains of nationhood, Nigeria has survived numerous challenges, including the civil war.
Senator Akume, in his remarks, urged former President Obasanjo to continue supporting the government and the unity of the nation. “You have always spoken in favour of our unity, and I hope you will continue to do so, as this government is also your government,” he said.
Akume also lauded the efforts of the armed forces and security personnel in combating insecurity across the country.
Delta State Governor Oborevwori, meanwhile, encouraged Nigerians to persevere in the face of economic difficulties. “There is hunger and despair in the land due to inflation and high living costs, but these too shall pass. Every problem has an expiry date, and this will not be an exception,” he said.
“We must refuse to give up. Tough times never last, but tough people do. Let us remain hopeful and continue praying for Nigeria’s unity, peace, and prosperity,” he concluded.
