NLC Halts Protest as FG Agrees to Review Telecom Tariff Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned protest against the 50 per cent increase in telecommunications tariffs following a meeting with a federal government delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, on Monday.
A statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Segun Imohiosen, explained that the meeting was convened to ensure industrial harmony and safeguard the interests of Nigerians.
Speaking on behalf of the federal government, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the meeting aimed to review the study conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which informed the decision to raise telecommunications tariffs by 50 per cent.
Following extensive deliberations, both parties agreed to establish a 10-member committee—comprising five representatives from the federal government and five from the NLC—to reassess the study and submit a report within two weeks.
Summarising the outcome, Idris stated: “Labour, specifically the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the federal government’s delegation have agreed to set up a committee with five representatives from each side. We will continue to meet over the next two weeks, after which we will present recommendations to both the government and organised labour for final consideration.”
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, affirmed that the union would await the committee’s findings before deciding on its next course of action.
