North-East Governors Back Formal Education for Almajiri, Pledge State-Level Support

Governors of Nigeria’s North-East states – Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe – have resolved to collaborate with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) by providing dedicated offices in each state.
This decision was contained in a communiqué delivered by Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, following the North-East Governors’ Forum meeting held on Thursday in Damaturu, Yobe State. The forum also pledged to support the enrolment of Almajiri and out-of-school children into the formal education system.
“The Forum resolved to work closely with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) by providing office spaces in each state, supporting enrolment into formal schools, offering vocational and technical education, and developing a unified approach to tackling the menace in the sub-region,” the communiqué stated.
The governors expressed concern over the increasing activities of insurgents in the region and urged the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and community leaders to reassess and strengthen counter-insurgency strategies.
“Addressing the security challenge in the North-East requires a multidimensional approach—not just kinetic strategies, but also tackling root causes such as youth unemployment through vocational and technical training, improved infrastructure, better access to education, and poverty alleviation,” the forum noted.
The governors also acknowledged the strategic importance of the Nigerian Law School campus in Yola and resolved to support its expansion through the provision of additional hostel accommodation, water supply, and other facilities to enhance its capacity and learning environment.
While commending the Federal Government and the military for their efforts against Boko Haram, the Forum reaffirmed its commitment to advancing collective interests in the areas of security, socio-economic development, and regional integration.
