Tinubu Awards Super Falcons National Honours, $100,000 and Homes After 10th WAFCON Win
President Bola Tinubu on Monday conferred national honours and cash rewards on the Super Falcons and their technical crew for clinching their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
During a ceremony held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, Tinubu bestowed the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each player and member of the technical team.
In addition to the honour, each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the 11-man technical crew were awarded $50,000 each and a three-bedroom flat in the Renewed Hope Estate, Abuja.
Flanked by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and top government officials, the President praised the team’s resilience and commitment to national pride.
“On behalf of a grateful nation, I confer on the players and technical crew the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON),” Tinubu said. “Each of you is also awarded a three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Estate, Abuja. In addition, every player will receive $100,000, while each crew member receives $50,000, in recognition of your dedication and achievement.”
Describing the team’s success as a significant milestone for Nigerian sport, Tinubu hailed the Super Falcons’ unity, courage, and discipline.
“You return home as African champions. Winning a tenth WAFCON title is no small feat. You have made Nigeria proud and cemented your legacy in African football,” he said. “Your triumph transcends sport—it symbolises the excellence we aspire to as a nation.”
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, also announced a donation of N10 million for each player on behalf of his fellow governors.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu commended the President’s ongoing commitment to sports development and athlete welfare. “I sincerely thank Mr President for receiving the team and showing consistent support for Nigerian sports and its future,” she said.
She also expressed confidence in the team’s potential for global success, including aspirations for a future FIFA Women’s World Cup victory.
“I told the President that the Falcons will win the World Cup, although he thinks I might be overly ambitious,” she joked.
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked Nigerians for their support and called for stronger institutional backing to sustain the team’s development.
“We appeal to the NFF, the NSC, and the Federal Government to continue supporting us. With improved facilities and support, we can achieve even greater heights,” she said.
Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie presented the WAFCON trophy to President Tinubu during the ceremony. Each team member also had a handshake with the President and joined a group photograph.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, praised the team’s spirit and linked their victory to the President’s ‘Renewed Hope Sports Agenda’.
“The Super Falcons’ triumph is a direct result of your unwavering support for sports and women. You have always believed in the power of sport to unite and uplift us,” Dikko said.
The event was attended by ministers, sports administrators, and dignitaries, and was seen as a deeply motivational gesture. The team had travelled directly from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the Presidential Villa for the reception.
