Tinubu Orders Security Chiefs to End Killings, Restore Peace in Troubled States

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate review of Nigeria’s national security approach, instructing security chiefs to take urgent steps to curb the escalating violence in Borno, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara states.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu condemned the recent wave of killings and insisted that innocent lives must no longer be lost to senseless violence.

During a meeting that lasted over two hours at the State House in Abuja, the President was briefed on the recent attacks, death tolls, and destruction of property. Visibly displeased, he reportedly told his security team: “Enough is enough.”

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, speaking to journalists after the meeting, said the President had been actively involved in security briefings even while on official visits to Paris and London.

“Even while he was away, the President remained in constant contact, giving instructions and monitoring developments,” Ribadu said. “Today, we gave a comprehensive briefing that lasted several hours. He issued fresh directives and insisted we do more to restore order.”

Ribadu noted that the security teams had visited flashpoints in Benue, Plateau, and Borno states in line with presidential directives. He added that the President emphasised the need to involve state and local governments in security efforts.

“Often, insecurity stems from community-level issues,” Ribadu explained. “We need to work more closely with governors, local government officials, and communities to find sustainable solutions.”

He also confirmed that the attackers often use improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and exploit ungoverned spaces to launch attacks.

“The President is extremely concerned. The directive is clear—we must restore peace, and we must do so now,” Ribadu stressed.
