Police Vow Crackdown as Osun LG Crisis Claims Six Lives

The Nigerian Police has mobilised to deal with election violence following the death of at least six people in Osun State on Monday.

A violent crisis triggered by a contentious Court of Appeal ruling, which allegedly reinstated local government chairmen and councillors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggered a violent confrontation between party supporters during which gunshots were believed to have been exchanged.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the casualties on Tuesday, stating that several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, told Channels Television that investigations were ongoing to restore order and apprehend those responsible for the violence.

The crisis escalated after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, raised concerns on Sunday, alleging a conspiracy led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, alongside top security officials, to enforce the court ruling. The governor urged the public to hold Oyetola and security agencies accountable for any unrest in the state.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to strengthen security and restore peace.

A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, strongly condemned the violence, reaffirming the police force’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force unequivocally condemns the violence that has disrupted peace and safety in Osun State. These actions have resulted in the destruction of property and the tragic loss of innocent lives. The Inspector-General of Police has directed the immediate deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to reinforce security efforts.”

The IGP warned individuals and groups instigating unrest, stating that the police would not tolerate lawlessness, hooliganism, or any attempts to undermine public order.

“Violence threatens democracy and the well-being of citizens. The Force is committed to identifying and prosecuting all those responsible for these criminal acts. Osun residents are urged to remain calm as security agencies work to restore normalcy.”

The statement further urged community leaders and stakeholders to discourage violence and encourage peaceful engagement in resolving disputes.
