Wrongly Accused? Bitar Cleared in CBEX Crypto Scam Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has removed a foreign national, Elie Bitar, from its wanted list over alleged fraud involving the Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX).

Bitar had been declared wanted on 30 April for his purported involvement in a fraudulent scheme on the CBEX platform. His details were published on EFCC’s social media platforms, with his last known address listed as Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale announced that Bitar had been cleared based on new information.

“Elie Bitar of CBEX Solutions Ltd., who was earlier declared wanted, has been removed from the list owing to fresh information that does not support his inclusion,” Oyewale said.

He added that investigations are progressing, with global law enforcement agencies collaborating to apprehend all individuals involved in the scam.

Oyewale said the EFCC is “gaining significant ground” in tracking the eight suspects linked to the CBEX fraud, which left many Nigerians reporting financial losses when the scheme collapsed in April.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has already granted the EFCC permission to arrest and detain individuals promoting the fraudulent scheme.
