Akwa Ibom Principal Suspended Over Allegations of Poor Hostel Feeding

The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended the Principal-General of Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, Nse Sunday Umoh, following allegations of poor feeding in the school’s boarding facilities.
In a statement released in Uyo on Saturday, the State Commissioner for Education, Idongesit Etiebet, revealed that the suspension followed an unscheduled visit to the school by ministry officials. The visit was prompted by a viral video showing students being served inadequate and non-nutritious meals, sparking public outcry.
“After viewing the disturbing video, I conducted an unscheduled visit to Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep. What I observed was unacceptable,” the commissioner stated.
She announced that the government had launched a comprehensive review of boarding facilities across all 25 state-owned boarding schools. The investigation will focus on hostels, dining halls, menus, kitchens, recreation areas, and sanitary conditions. The Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board will oversee the review.
“Pending the outcome of this investigation, the principal of the school, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended with immediate effect,” she added.
Etiebet reiterated that while the state’s free education policy covers only tuition fees, the welfare and dignity of students in public schools remain paramount to the Umo Eno-led administration. She urged parents to complement the government’s efforts by fulfilling their responsibilities toward their children.
“The Ministry is committed to ensuring that all public schools meet minimum standards that guarantee the well-being of learners and staff. We appeal for patience as the investigation unfolds,” she said.
The commissioner highlighted previous concerns about poor sanitary conditions and malnutrition in Akwa Ibom boarding schools, including Federal Government Colleges in the state, despite substantial boarding fees.
She reaffirmed Governor Pastor Umo Eno’s dedication to education through the ARISE Agenda and called on all stakeholders to work collectively to uphold quality standards in the state’s schools.
