National Grid Collapses for Sixth Time This Year, Causing Widespread Power Outages

Millions of Nigerians were left in darkness on Monday as the national electricity grid collapsed yet again. Electricity distribution companies across the country reported the grid failure, which occurred at approximately 6:48 p.m., leading to widespread power outages.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which services parts of Lagos, informed its customers via X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that there was a system collapse at 18:48hrs, resulting in a loss of power supply across our network. We are working with our partners to ensure speedy restoration and will keep you updated.”
A similar message was shared by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which covers the southeastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo:
“We regret to inform our customers that there has been a general system collapse, resulting in a loss of supply across our network,” EEDC announced.
The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company also notified their customers about the outage, promising swift restoration once the grid stabilises.
This marks yet another incident in a series of national grid collapses this year, with previous failures recorded on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, and August 5. As of Monday evening, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had yet to release an official statement regarding the latest collapse.
In April, Nafisat Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO) at the TCN, attributed the frequent grid collapses to issues across the power sector. These include gas supply shortages, inadequate coordination of power plants, and poor generation capacity.
