LUTH CMD Counsels Young Doctors Over ‘Japa’ Trend
Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has advised the recent medical graduates from the University of Ilorin to resist the allure of the ‘japa’ syndrome and instead, dedicate themselves to practicing medicine within the country.
Adeyemo delivered this message on Monday during the induction ceremony of 144 medical graduands from the College of Health Sciences, held in Ilorin.
Speaking on the topic: “Addressing Brain Drain in Health Sector: Cultivating Opportunities at Home,” the esteemed professor extended congratulations to the inductees, encouraging them with the sentiment that their future shines brightly.
He underlined the importance of the young medical professionals contributing their skills and efforts towards the nation’s peace and progress, even in the face of challenges.
Adeyemo acknowledged the prevalent issues of low remuneration and unfavorable working conditions that doctors often encounter in the country. Despite these challenges, he urged the new graduates to look beyond the negatives and take inspiration from their senior colleagues who have remained dedicated to the country’s development.
“While we are optimistic about the resolution of these challenges, particularly in terms of remuneration, infrastructure, and funding, it’s imperative that we, the seasoned professionals, engage in discussions with the younger generation about the numerous opportunities available here. These opportunities span clinical practice, both public and private, academia, research, and various other domains,” he emphasized.
The CMD recognized that the solution to addressing the brain drain goes beyond merely implementing mandatory five-year practice, but involves understanding why Nigerians often choose to relocate abroad.
Adeyemo urged the senior members of the profession to facilitate mentoring relationships between themselves and the young graduates, similar to what is seen in the legal field. He stressed the importance of guiding the new doctors away from decisions that might hinder their growth and progress.
Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of mentors for young medical doctors, suggesting that they learn from and draw motivation from the achievements of their senior colleagues who have opted to remain in the country.
Beginning the event, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, extended congratulations to the graduands and their parents for successfully completing their training. He encouraged them to exhibit compassion, care, and concern for humanity as they venture into their medical careers.
“Today, we celebrate not only with your parents, who have made significant sacrifices to bring you to this point, but also with the Nigerian society that has nurtured and produced you. In appreciation, give back to your society and make the most of the opportunities available to you here,” he urged.
Egbewole also noted the shift from the popular “japa” trend to a more constructive “japada” outlook, advising the new doctors to embrace the latter and fully utilize the opportunities within their home country.
