Rivers Police Remove DPO, Order Probe into Outpost Renovation by Suspected Cultists

The Rivers State Police Command has relieved the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the Abuloma Police Outpost of their duties and ordered a full investigation following reports that suspected cultists renovated the facility.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the command said it had taken note of a trending social media report and a circulating video alleging that suspected cultists renovated the outpost and visited the facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the project.

The command condemned any action or association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline, and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or conferring legitimacy, recognition, or acceptance on suspected cult groups and other unlawful organisations.

It stressed that police facilities were public institutions established to protect citizens and enforce the law and must not become platforms through which criminal groups seek public validation or influence.

Under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, the command said it maintained zero tolerance for criminality and any conduct that undermined public confidence in the police.

It added that the two officers had been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The commissioner also ordered a full investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the veracity of the allegations.

The probe will seek to establish the identities and backgrounds of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation; the police officers who authorised or approved the project; whether due procedures were followed; whether any officer breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Force; and the extent of police personnel’s involvement.

The command said it welcomed legitimate community support for improving police facilities, in accordance with Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

However, it insisted that such support must not compromise police independence, professional standards, or security.

The investigation will also establish whether the necessary approvals were obtained and appropriate checks conducted on those who financed or facilitated the renovation. The command added that no donation or assistance conferred immunity from investigation or prosecution.

It reiterated that it would not condone unprofessional conduct, compromise, or any form of improper association with criminal elements by any police officer. All personnel, it said, were expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and accountability.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, the protection of lives and property, and the fight against cultism and organised crime. It pledged that appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable, in line with the findings of the investigation and extant laws.
