Technical Glitch Shuts Down Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Globally

Meta-owned platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp experienced a global outage on Wednesday evening, leaving millions of users unable to access the services.

Frustrated users took to X (formerly Twitter) to report the disruption, which began around the same time across all three platforms. Monitoring site Downdetector recorded over 100,000 outage reports for Facebook and more than 70,000 for Instagram.

“We are aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps,” Meta said in a post on X. “We’re working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience.”

This is not the first time Meta’s platforms have faced such issues. Similar outages occurred in May 2024 and October 2021, which were attributed to technical faults rather than security breaches.

The disruption affected key functionalities, with Facebook users unable to log in despite using correct passwords, while Instagram users reported unrefreshed feeds. WhatsApp users were also unable to send or receive messages.

Nigeria, which has over 33 million active social media users, was among the countries impacted. WhatsApp remains the most popular platform in Nigeria, with over 90 million users, followed by Facebook and Instagram.
