Tragedy in Ibadan: Police Arrest Ooni’s Ex-Wife, Principal as 35 Minors Die Confirmed Dead

Thirty-five minors have been confirmed dead following a stampede at a funfair held at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage, with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde pledging a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster. The governor also assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice while expressing condolences to the bereaved families.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Oyo State Police Command announced the arrest of eight individuals in connection with the tragedy. Among those detained is Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, who was identified as the event’s primary sponsor.

The Command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, revealed that others in custody include the Principal of Islamic High School, Fasasi Abdulahi, alongside Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.

“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform residents that eight persons have been arrested for their various roles in the unfortunate incident,” Osifeso said in a statement.

He confirmed that 35 children had died in the stampede, while six others are critically injured and receiving medical treatment.

The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, where the Deputy Commissioner of Police is leading the investigation.

Osifeso urged residents to remain calm, adding that there would be heightened police patrols and visibility across the state to maintain order and prevent any opportunistic criminal activities in the wake of the tragedy.

The state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
