University Strike Looms as FG Delays Crucial ASUU Talks

The meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), initially scheduled for today (Monday), has been postponed.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed to Channels Television that the meeting, previously announced by the Minister of Education on Friday, will no longer hold as planned.

While no official reason was provided for the postponement, the meeting is now expected to take place on Wednesday, 28th August.

Public university lecturers had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike following resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Ibadan on 19th August 2024. The proposed strike is in response to the Federal Government’s failure to honour the 2009 renegotiated agreement.

ASUU’s demands include matters related to staff welfare, funding for universities, and the need to halt the unchecked proliferation of universities across the country.
