Police Dismiss ASP, Four Others Over Unlawful Killing in Delta
The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Nuhu Usman, and four other officers over the unlawful killing of a suspect in the Effurun area of Delta State, reinforcing its stance on accountability and professional conduct.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, announced the dismissals, stating that the affected officers would also face criminal prosecution.
According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun acted on intelligence that a suspect, identified as Ogidi, had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
Following the killing, Usman and members of his team were arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary proceedings.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal and recommended prosecution, forwarding the decision to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The action followed a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which examined the incident alongside established internal procedures.
Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja, Disu stated that the officers were found to have acted in “gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms”.
The committee subsequently recommended their immediate dismissal.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP said.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he added.
